Hi, I’m Sabine
I’m a Wanneroo local and have lived in the area for more than 40 years.
I never thought that I would be a Member of Parliament, and I thank the voters of Wanneroo for the trust that they have placed in me as their local representative.
I started my political journey unintentionally when I led a grassroots campaign that saw us protect Lake Nowergup from the encroachment of mining. Being a local and active advocate for my community led me to run for the City of Wanneroo Council. I was a Councillor from 2013 to 2017. I was elected as the Member for Wanneroo in 2017.
Like many Australian my family are migrants. My parents arrived with their three children from Dieburg in what was then West Germany in 1973 and settled in Fairy Meadow, near Wollongong. My parents literally came with nothing but hope and a dream, and a dogged determination to create a better life, as do many migrants who come here. In 1975 we travelled across the Nullarbor Plain to settle in Yanchep. I went to Yanchep Primary School and then Wanneroo Secondary College where I was President of the Student Council, and played netball at Wanneroo District Netball Association - told you I was local!
After graduating from Murdoch University with a primary teaching degree, I took the opportunity to work and live across the state, including in the goldfields town of Norseman, and Fitzroy Crossing in the Kimberley, and to the tropical isolation of Cocos Keeling Islands, before relocating back to Wanneroo to start a family. Those formative years as a teacher have served me well, and my time working with the Aboriginal community in Fitzroy Crossing and the Malay community on Cocos helped to shape my world view.
My most recent teaching appointment was working in the field of gifted and talented education. Prior to my election, for the past 12 years, I was a primary extension and challenge coordinator (PEAC) with the Department of Education. It was also a time when I achieved the status of level 3 classroom teacher. I have enjoyed my time advocating for the special needs of our brightest students. My passion for education still continues and I regularly go to the schools in my electorate to teach them about Civics and Citizenship.
In Parliament, I serve as an Acting Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and on the Education and Health Standing Committee.
I am absolutely giving my all to serve the people of Wanneroo and promise that I will continue to do so.
My electorate takes in the suburbs of Ashby, Carabooda, Carramar, Hocking, Neerabup, Nowergup, Pearsall, Pinjar, Sinagra, Tapping and Wanneroo. If you would like to meet me please don’t hesitate to contact me – I am always here to help.
